Tarraleah redevelopment project connects with contractors and community

26 March, 2026

A major milestone has been reached in Hydro Tasmania’s proposal to redevelop the Tarraleah hydropower scheme in Central Tasmania, with the launch of the first stage of the construction tender.

Entura’s expertise has been integral to Hydro Tasmania’s consideration of options for the Tarraleah scheme, some components of which are more than 80 years old. Entura was involved in the feasibility stages of the project and is continuing to play a key role in Hydro Tasmania’s integrated owner’s team.

We have contributed our power and water expertise to help develop a sound understanding of project risks, costs, future revenue, operational flexibility, schedule and possible procurement methods. In parallel, we have provided a range of services to design and deliver an upgrade works program, including a new water intake and connecting tunnel at Lake King William to meet up with a potential future new water conveyance.

For these works, Entura has conducted the geotechnical investigations, surveying, design, environmental surveys, water monitoring, planning, mechanical and electrical inputs, project management, site supervision and contractor management.

On 14 March, Entura’s Graduate Environmental Consultant Holly Andree attended the iconic annual Hamilton Show in the Central Highlands, along with Hydro Tasmania colleagues, for a day of community conversations about the proposed Tarraleah redevelopment.

“We wanted to share helpful information on the project, the upgrade works and potential environmental and social impacts we’ve identified for the proposed redevelopment,” said Holly.

“We had great conversations with the many community members who stopped to chat about everything from the Tarraleah Village and future job opportunities to what’s next for the project.”

The Environmental Impact Statement and Development Application for Tarraleah, developed by Entura alongside Hydro Tasmania, will open for public comment soon. More community visits are being planned during April.

Tarraleah is one of 2 major hydropower construction projects proposed by Hydro Tasmania. The second is a long-duration pumped storage project at Cethana, with which Entura has been involved from the earliest stages.

Note: Hydro Tasmania’s Tarraleah and Cethana projects have not yet reached final investment decision. They will also require environmental and planning approvals as well as approval by the Tasmanian Parliament.
