Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) allows us to visualise and analyse complex flow behaviour that can be difficult or impossible to observe in the field. By creating detailed models, we can assess hydraulic performance, investigate potential issues and test design improvements before construction.

Our specialists use CFD across a range of applications including dams, spillways, weirs, waterways and hydraulic structures. CFD can help identify flow separation, air entrainment, turbulence, vibration risks and other hydraulic behaviours that influence safety, performance and asset life.

The example below demonstrates CFD modelling of flow over a weir. A low-pressure zone beneath the nappe causes the flow to cling to the downstream face of the structure. The simulation shows how introducing a flow splitter allows air behind the nappe, enabling the flow to separate cleanly from the weir and reducing the potential for unstable flow behaviour.
